Sinker Sapodilla

Other Common Names: Chicle, Nispero, Sapote, Zapotillo, Dilly, Mispel, Zapote.

Characteristics: Sapodilla is a hard and heavy wood. Very well known for its strength and durability. Some Mayan structures have been discovered to still contain sound pilings and joists of Sapodilla wood. Heartwood color is described as dark reddish or reddish-brown. Texture varies depending on growing conditions but generally very fine and polishes to a lustrous sheen. Sharp tools are a must for this species and hand planing can be a challenge without a high iron angle.
